Eddie Baird, born November 19, 1966, made his racing debut in 1985. He was Champion Apprentice at Hawthorne, Chicago in 1986, with a then record 103 wins. His major career wins include the Hawthorne Juvenile, Illinois Coronet Handicap, Sixty Sails Handicap. Still largely Chicago-based, Baird finished 11th at the 2005 Arlington Park Summer meeting, riding 26 winners from 238 starts. He finished 13th at the Hawthorne Autumn meeting with 18 victories.


Beadman, Darren

Darren Beadman, 40, rode his first Gr.1 winner as an apprentice on Inspired in the 1984 Golden Slipper. Since then he has been one of Australia's leading riders, netting more than 60 Group 1 winners, including two Melbourne Cups (Kingston Rule and Saintly). He took a two-year sabbatical - for bible studies - but in the six years since has been riding better than ever. Supported by the powerful John Hawkes stable, Beadman broke his own Sydney record when he rode 143 winners in 2004/05 season and is well clear again in 2005/06. In Hong Kong his greatest moment came astride Catalan Opening, winning the Hong Kong International Bowl in 1997.

Felix Coetzee, born March 7, 1959, is a former champion jockey in South Africa. Recently breached the 500-winner barrier after 14 HK seasons. Has had a tremendous run in recent times, thanks to his link with trainer Tony Cruz and Silent Witness and Lucky Owners in particular: 9 Gr.1s from 18 wins on the former including two CXHK Sprints and a Sprinters' Stakes and the HK Mile and 2004 Mercedes-Benz Hong Kong Derby on the latter. Enjoyed best ever HK term in 2004/05 with 81 wins.


Delpech, Anthony

Anthony Delpech, born February 10, 1969 in the Seychelles, moved to Durban, South Africa, aged 13. He was South Africa's champion rider in 2002/03 and in 1998/99 when he bagged a record haul of 333 winners. Twice won South Africa's most prestigious event, the Durban July. Enjoyed an excellent second season in HK, lit up especially by his successes on Vengeance Of Rain in the Mercedes-Benz Hong Kong Derby and Audemars Piguet QEII Cup and Champions & Chater Cup. Has ridden 79 winners in HK up until the December 3, 2005 meeting.


Dettori, Lanfranco

Frankie Dettori will be 35 four days after CXHKIR 2005. Born in Italy, he has achieved enormously in a brilliant career. Britain's champion apprentice in 1989, he has three times been that country's Champion Jockey, regaining the title last year after a 10-year gap. Has won 138 Gr.1 races worldwide, with the Epsom Derby still elusive and the one he most wants. He famously rode all seven winners at Ascot in September 1996. His record in Hong Kong is also excellent; won the Hong Kong Cup in 2000 and 2003 on Fantastic Light and Falbrav, the 2004 CXHK Mile on Firebreak, the 1996 Hong Kong Vase on Luso and the QEII Cup in the same year aboard Overbury.

Olivier Doleuze, born 19 April 1972, was the Champion Apprentice of France in 1989 under the tutelage of Criquette Head-Maarek for whom he later served as retained rider, enjoying considerable success most notably with French Classic winners, Green Tune and Egyptband. Doleuze has also ridden with success in Singapore where a 2001 Singapore Krisflyer Sprint win on Iron Mask stands out. Doleuze was a huge hit in his first Hong Kong stint in 2001/02 and has since ridden 140 winners up until the December 3, 2005 meeting ˇV and despite a six-month worldwide ban in 2003.


Dwyer, Martin

Martin Dwyer, born June 28, 1975, won his first race in 1993 for trainer Ian Balding and is now stable jockey for Ian's son, Andrew. Finally broke through as a top rider in Britain in 2003, landing a Classic (Epsom Oaks) on Casual Look and forging an excellent association with the very popular stayer, Persian Punch. He won a trio of international majors aboard Phoenix Reach: the Gr.1 Canadian International, the 2004 CX Hong Kong Vase and Dubai Sheema Classic. His biggest win in a season yielding nearly 70 winners in Britain this term came on Sir Percy in the Gr.1 Dewhurst Stakes.


Dye, Shane

Shane Dye, 39, was born in New Zealand but moved to Sydney in 1985 made the switch very successful, riding the winners of over 90 Gr.1 races including the Melbourne Cup (Tawriffic), Cox Plate (Octagonal), and four consecutive Golden Slippers. Also won two Sydney jockeys' premierships. This is his sixth full season riding in Hong Kong where he had ridden 323 winners until the end of November 2005. The best horses he has ridden here include the 2002/03 Horse of the Year Grand Delight and last season's Champion Stayer, Super Kid. Dye is now retained rider for Danny Shum.

Kieren Fallon, 40, moved to Britain from Ireland aged 23 has been champion jockey six times. Has won 55 Gr.1 races to date - 12 in 2005 - including several British and Irish Classics including the Epsom Derby (three times), 1000 Guineas (four times), 2000 Guineas (three times), Epsom Oaks (three times), etc. Has also won the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes and in October won the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf for the second successive year. Moved from being Michael Stoute's stable jockey to successfully take over as first rider to Aidan O'Brien this year. Won the Arc and Irish Derby on Hurricane Run in 2005.

Robbie Fradd, 41, is in his eighth season riding in Hong Kong and having come within three winners of the jockeys' championship in 1998-1999 (despite missing three months of the season), he won the title a year later with 74 winners. Had ridden over 363 HK winners up until the end of November and enjoyed a successful partnership with Fairy King Prawn, principally winning the 2000 Yasuda Kinen. Also won the Hong Kong Derby on Keen Winner in 2000 and, on Electronic Unicorn, the Stewards' Cup in 2002 and 2003. Also won his second Durban July in South Africa in 2003.

Born 27 February 1972, rode in his first winner in March 1991. He has partnered well over 1000 winners in Japan, including nine Jpn Gr.1 winners such as 1996 Derby champion Fusaichi Concorde, Oaks winner of 2000, Silk Prima Donna and the JpnGr.1 Takarazuka Kinen aboard Dantsu Flame. His fancied CXHK Mile mount Asakusa Denˇ¦en took home the Yasuda Kinen this year also. This is Fujitaˇ¦s second visit to the CXHKIR: he rode JpnGr.1 Takamatsunomiya Kinen winner Shonan Kampf in the Sprint in 2002, finishing 10th.


Gillet, Thierry

Thierry Gillet, 36, rode his first winner in 1986 but had to wait until 2001 for a first Gr.1 success on Act One. Had an extraordinary 2004, winning five Gr.1 races, chiefly the Prix de lˇ¦Arc de Triomphe on Bago and though he was in 13th in the jockeys' table with 50 wins, he was a clear leader in terms of stakes won. Gillet had 35 wins in France this year. He finished second in 1999 Hong Kong Vase aboard Bimbola and fourth last term on his 2005 mount Sweet Stream on whom he also won the Gr.2 Park Hill Stakes in England in September.

Son of top trainer Barry and twin of equally successful Michael, Richard Hills was born January 22, 1963. Rode his first winner in 1979 and has been riding for top owner Hamdan Al Maktoum as far back as 1982 (retained since 1997 after Willie Carson retired). Won the Dubai World Cup in 1999 on Almutawakel and over 80 Group races overall, over 20 of those at Gr.1 level. Highlight wins have come on Nayef (two Gr.1s), Haafhd (2000 Guineas), Lahan (1000 Guineas) and this year on Eswarah (Epsom Oaks). He has partnered over 1500 winners in Europe.

Peter Ho Wah-lun, 31, began his riding career as a HK apprentice in 1991/92 and by 1996/97 he had ridden 30 winners, the main success coming aboard Makarpura Star in the ATV Cup. Relocated to Macau in 1998 and lost his claim by May 2000. Has flourished as a freelance rider, linking up especially well with Y Y Choy, trainer of his CXHK Sprint mount Warcat, winning the Macau Cup (MacGr.2). In 2004/05 Ho finished third in the Jockeyˇ¦s Premiership with 59 wins and was a close second on November 29, 2005, in the current year's table with 18 wins.


Hughes, Richard

Born 11 January 1973 in Ireland, served his apprenticeship under father Dessie, the top trainer and former National Hunt jockey. Though Richard enjoyed good success over the jumps, he moved to Britain in 1994 to pursue a career as a Flat jockey and has since managed to keep the weight of his tall frame comfortably in check. Won his first Gr.1 in the 1995 Gran Premio di Milano on Posidonas. He is the retained jockey for Prince Khalid Abdullah and he regularly finishes with over 100 wins in the British Jockeys' Championship. Biggest earner in recent years was the Oasis Dream, Europeˇ¦s sprint champion of 2003.

Mick Kinane, 46, has 117 Gr.1 winners to his name including two Prix de l'Arc de Triomphes (Carroll House, Montjeu), four King Georges, the Belmont Stakes (Go And Go), Breeders' Cups (Johannesburg and High Chaparral (twice)), the Melbourne Cup (Vintage Crop), two Hong Kong Derbies (Sound Print, Che Sara Sara) and a Hong Kong Cup (Precision) in 2002. Won his 13th Irish jockeys' title in 2003. Made his first visit to Hong Kong in 1986/87 and has since ridden over 160 winners. Has been retained by Dermot Weld and Aidan O'Brien in Ireland but now rides for John Oxx.

Eric Legrix, 39, won the Breeders' Cup Turf on Miss Alleged in 1991 and soon afterwards was persuaded to move to HK by former boss Patrick Biancone with whom he enjoyed two Hong Kong Derby wins (Helene Star and Johan Cruyff). Legrix racked up 330 winners in 13 HK seasons before returning to France injured towards the end of 2002/03. He re-established himself well in France last season, teaming up with champion trainer Andre Fabre to win the Gr.1 Prix du Moulin on Grey Lilas. Two wins at Gr.3 level were the highlights of 26 French wins this year and he had partnered 13 winners in Macau from the start of November until December 4, 2005.

Christophe Lemaire, 26, is the son a jump jockey and started his racing life as an amateur rider aged 16. He rode his first Gr.1 winner on Vespone in the Prix Jean Prat in 2003 and also won the Grand Prix de Paris. He recently finished second in the Japan Cup for the second year running, nosed on Heart's Cry. This year he rode 81 winners in France, finishing seventh in the title race and fourth in terms of stakes won. His most notable triumphs were the Gr.1 double aboard Starcraft in the Prix du Moulin and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes.

Kevin Manning, 38, has long been stable jockey to top Irish trainer Jim Bolger. The biggest win during the early years of his career was the 1994 Gr.1 Phoenix Stakes on Eva Luna. More recently, he rode Margarula to take the Gr.1 Irish Oaks in 2002 but his real heroine has been Alexander Goldrun on whom he won last year's CXHK Cup as well as three other Gr.1s in Europe. Rounded up his Irish 2005 season finishing in the top ten again with 38 winners. Had a stint in HK in 1995/96, when he rode six winners from 99 rides.

Gerald Mosse, born Jan 3, 1968, was French Champion Apprentice in 1984. Rode his first Gr.1 winner in Florida in 1988 and has since ridden well over 40 Gr.1 winners in Europe. Career highlight remains his triumph on Saumarez in the 1990 Arc and he has won all the French Classics, including five Oaks and two Derbies. Retained as Aga Khan's rider in France for eight years. Is in his 13th season riding in Hong Kong and he has ridden well over 300 winners here including three Hong Kong Derbies. His biggest money-spinner was Jim And Tonic, on whom he won the Hong Kong Bowl, Hong Kong Cup and AP QEII Cup. He also won the Hong Kong Sprint in 2002 on All Thrills Too.

Olivier Peslier, born January 12, 1973, has been French champion jockey four times. Had his first big-race success in 1995 in the Irish Derby and landed the Hong Kong Vase on Partipral in 1995. Won three Prix de l'Arc de Triomphes from 1996 to 1998. Enjoyed a HKIR double on Docksider (Mile) and Borgia (Vase) in 1999. Won the International Jockeys' Championship in 1998. Spends the winter riding in Japan and won the 2001 and 2004 Japan Cups on Jungle Pocket and Zenno Rob Roy. Has ridden CXHK Vase mount Westerner to victory in two Gr.1 wins, including this year's Royal Ascot Gold Cup at York.


Prado, Edgar

Born June 12, 1967, in Peru where he was the leading jockey, aged 17. Moved to America aged 19. Three times the leading jockey in the USA, Prado rode 536 winners in 1997, becoming only the fourth jockey to ride over 500 winners in America in a season. Has registered more than 4,000 career wins. Won the Belmont Stakes at odds of 70/1 in 2002 on Sarava. Was on the verge of riding 300 winners (including 8 Gr.1s) this season by the end of November.


Robinson, Philip

Philip Robinson, 44, formerly twice a champion jockey in Hong Kong (1988/89, 1989/90) where he rode over 170 winners in seven different stints. Since returning to his native Britain he has won Classics there and in Ireland and France and has especially been associated with smart fillies such as Pebbles, Katies and Crimplene. Has enjoyed five Gr.1 victories on Rakti over the past two seasons and has ridden over 60 winners in Britain over the last three years.

Aged 40, Eric Saint-Martin is in his 12th season as a Club Jockey in Hong Kong, riding 327 winners up until the end of November 2005 - best season was 49 wins in 1998/99. Wins on Oriental Express and Olympic Express in the 1999 Champions & Chater Cup and 2003 HK Gold Cup on in 2003 are among his local high points. Undoubted career highlight, however, came with Urban Sea's victory in the 1993 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. He is the son of Yves Saint-Martin, one of the greatest riders in French racing history.

Schofield, born in England on January 25 1967 - but raised in South Africa !V has been doing well in Hong Kong where he is now in his fourth full term with 136 wins recorded by the end of November 2005. Clear highlight was the long-priced success on River Dancer in the 2004 Audemars Piguet QEII Cup for trainer John Size. Has won stacks of races in South Africa (including the South African Derby), and many more in Mauritius, Australia and Singapore.

Hirofumi Shii, born November 30, 1972, was first licensed 13 years ago and at the end of November sat just a handful of victories short of 1000 wins in Japan. He is best known in Hong Kong for his Hong Kong Cup triumph on Agnes Digital in 2001. He also captured the Tenno Sho and Yasuda Kinen on the same horse. He has also won the Japanese 2000 Guineas and came 2nd in the same race this term on his CXHK Vase mount, Six Sense

Christophe Soumillon, born June 4 1981 in Belgium, rode his first winner in France at 17 and was Champion Apprentice at 19. Won the French Derby in 2001 and was later appointed as the Aga Khan's rider. Won the French Derby and Prix de l'Arc on Dalakhani and the French Jockeys' Championship with over 200 winners all in 2003. Set a new French record for 226 victories this year; campaign highlight was his victory on Shirocco in the Breeders' Cup Turf. Notable success in HK also, sharing the Cathay Pacific International Jockeys' Championship last season and winning the Stewards' Cup on Bullish Luck and the Hong Kong Gold Cup on Perfect Partner.

Jamie Spencer, 25, burst onto the scene with winning the Irish 1000 Guineas as an apprentice in 1998. Since then he has never been far from big race success and he won the Singapore Airlines International Cup in 2001. Won his first British Classic in 2003, the St Leger.  Was Ireland's Champion Jockey in 2004 while stable jockey to Aidan O'Brien, but broke the association early in 2005 to ride freelance in England and later claimed the Jockeys' championship on 162 victories, riding winners for some 60 individual trainers. Rode nine HK winners in two Club Jockey stints.

Andrasch Starke, born January 4, 1974, won his first German jockeys' championship in 1998, the same year as his first German Derby success on Robertico. Added three more championships from 1999 to 2001 and in between won the International Jockeys' Championship at Happy Valley. Banned worldwide for six months in 2002 but bounced back immediately to claim German Derby on Next Desert. Regained the German riders' title in 2003 and finished third in 2004, when he won on Epalo in the Singapore Airlines International Cup. In fifth place in the German championship in 2005.

Born October 23, 1973, Hiroyuki Uemura had partnered 377 winners by the end of November 2005. He hasn't had that much big race success of late, with most of his big winners (at JpnGr.2 and Jpn Gr.3 level) coming in the early to mid 1990s. He has yet to ride a Gr.1 winner in Japan.

Douglas Whyte, 34, from Durban, South Africa, has been champion jockey in Hong Kong for the last five seasons and, barring accidents, is set for another title in 2005/2006. He has ridden well over 700 winners in HK and is heading towards Tony Cruz's all-time record. He has won the Hong Kong Gold Cup and Hong Kong Vase on Indigenous; Audemars Piguet QEII Cup (London News), Chairman's Prize (Oriental Express); Centenary Cup (Best Of The Best); Hong Kong Classic Mile (Tiber) and many more major events.
